About Navjot Altaf

One of India‘s leading contemporary artists, Navjot Altaf is a major artistic voice in postcolonial Indian art, her work is known both nationally and internationally and her nearly five decade-long practice involves painting, sculptures, installations, video and site-specific works that negotiate various disciplinary boundaries. Her methodology ascertains the interactive aspects of collaboration and the work emerges out of an extended dialogical interaction with a diverse range of people including artists of Indigenous origin (since 1997) in Chhattisgarh, Central India, intellectuals, filmmakers, academics and activists. Through these collaborations, her work speaks expansively and sensitively about the socio-political conditions of the world we find ourselves in, causing us to reflect on the internal and external conflicts we face whilst making meaning of our contexts. She is interested in understanding the significance of transdisciplinary work “whose nature is not merely to cross disciplinary boundaries”.

Navjot has been participating in national and international seminars Including Anthropocene Curriculum at the House of World Culture, Berlin, (2014 and 2016) and Goethe Institute Mumbai (2018).

About The Guild

The Guild was set up in 1997 in Mumbai, India. Since its inception, it has aimed at functioning as a semi-institutional space and has been providing a platform for discursive practices, innovation and experimentation in contemporary art. We believe in promoting critical ideas and work with artists who are engaged in critical practices in different mediums reflecting diverse perspectives in their practices. We have been engaging with artists who range from emerging and mid-career to the senior Indian artists who have brought in robust dialogue within and across the field. Our objective is to contribute to the artistic production as well as to the curatorial practices in India.

We strongly believe in building an extensive scholarship through academically and critically rigorous books and catalogues authored by well-known and emerging academicians, art critics, art historians and artists – on artists and their practices that would hopefully form as an important scholarship in the trajectories of these artists and become mainstream material in the construct of Indian Art History. In December 2018 January 2019, we presented a retrospective of Navjot Altaf in collaboration with National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), Mumbai, curated by independent curator and art critic Nancy Adajania. During November 2019 – February 2020 we will be presenting a retrospective of Sudhir Patwardhan at National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai in collaboration with NGMA, Mumbai. Our current publishing projects include a book on artist-photographer Jyoti Bhatt, with an essay by Ram Rahman; two other books are at completion stage including two more in the planning; catalogues in the making are - on our past exhibitions and a catalogue on our current exhibition Sculpsit curated by Sasha Altaf, currently on at Sunaparanta Goa Centre for the Arts to be published jointly with Sunaparanta.
