We are delighted to share that K. P. Reji’s works are featured in the Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale 2026, titled “In Interludes and Transitions" curated by Nora Razian and Sabih Ahmed. Huge congratulations to K. P. Reji! The Biennale brings together artists, musicians, filmmakers, architects, and writers to amplify the resilience of people in times of uncertainty. It explores how art functions as a vital tool for preserving collective memory, asserting the power of the multitude, and fostering hope amid adversity.
Reji participates with three seminal works, Flag (2022),
rendered in silver and black and reflecting the protests that swept
India between 2020 and 2022, and Walk (2025),
a meditation on the long history of displacement and its demands.
These are joined by a newly commissioned work for the biennale, Tin
Drum (2025),
a triptych inspired by Volker Schlöndorff's film The Tin Drum.
The triptych works at various levels, the left side a hyper-real
contemporary world: society functioning “normally” while the storm
clouds in the centre act like surreal breaks, moments where realism
fractures and something symbolic intrudes. The clouds visually
interrupt history… while the dark right side echoes the void,
silence and unease – a sense that the past bleeds forward into
something unknowable.
Reji was invited for Kochi-Muziris Biennale, 2012, Kochi; Shadow Lines, curated by Suman Gopinath and Alia Swastika, Jogja Biennale, Indonesia 2011–12. He has been represented by The Guild in many international art fairs, such as Art Taipei, India Art Fair, Dubai Art Fair, Hong Kong Art Fair, and Art Basel Hong Kong. His recent solo exhibitions include Cut Pieces, The Guild, Alibaug, 2022; With a Pinch of Salt, Nature Morte, New Delhi, in collaboration with and at The Guild, Mumbai, 2009; Just Above My Head, The Guild, Mumbai, 2009. Reji’s work has been featured in Phaidon publication Vitamin P3: New Perspectives in Painting (2016), for which he was nominated by art historian Geeta Kapur.
In 2022, a mid-career retrospective of Reji’s works was presented by
The Guild in collaboration with the Madhavan Nayar Foundation and
Kerala Museum, Kochi, The
Good Earth: K. P. Reji, curated by Suman Gopinath. A
catalogue of the retrospective is due out soon.
