Navjot Altaf
'The Earth's
Heart, Torn Out'
Essay by
“[Navjot’s] art is process-oriented rather than medium-centric, and has been premised on the act of shaping, drafting and re-mapping a life journey of artistic and civic interventions. Navjot’s trajectory has been marked by unexpected detours and punctuated by barriers that she has overcome with grace and persistence.” – Nancy Adajania. The retrospective exhibition of Navjot Altaf, 'The Earth's Heart, Torn Out' Navjot Altaf: A Life in Art, curated by Nancy Adajania and presented by The Guild and the National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai, was the first major exhibition to look at Navjot's works over the span of her fifty-year long career. This publication offers an in-depth look back over Navjot's oeuvre, with a curatorial monograph by Nancy Adajania, and a conversation between Navjot, Nancy Adajania, and writer Amrita Gupta. The monograph offers keen insights into Navjot's practice, identifying the key moments and phases of transition in her journey as an artist and activist. This volume features more than 300 images of the over 100 works that were featured in the exhibition, along with installation images from the show, stills of the video projects that were a part of the retrospective, and other material such as photographs and images of her various installations.
