Sudhir Patwardhan
is a painter whose work has been exhibited regularly in India and abroad in the past forty years. In 1982 he was one of 6 artists in the show ‘Place for People’ which was a landmark show in Indian Art and initiated a new concern with social issues in art. The city of Bombay and its surroundings have been a continuing source of inspiration for the artist. Alongside this social dimension, the more personal aspects of the artist’s presence in his own work, and the problems of representation, have preoccupied Patwardhan. Patwardhan has also been a curator who has focused on introducing new audiences to contemporary art.

Some recent one-person exhibition include 'Spectres' at Mumbai and Vadehra Art Gallery, 2017, Delhi;  ‘Route Maps’ in 2012 at The Guild, Mumbai; 'Family Fiction' in 2011, and 'Citing the City' in 2008 at Sakshi Gallery, Mumbai. Participations in important group exhibitions include Kochi Muziris Biennale 2014-2015; ‘Social Fabric’ at INIVA, London; and IFA -Galerie Stuttgart, Germany, 2013 and Modernist Art from India, Rubin Museum, New York. 2012.

Two books on his work by Ranjit Hoskote have been published - 'The Complicit Observer' (2004) and 'The Crafting of Reality' (2007). A monograph in Marathi by Padmakar Kulkarni 'Chitrakar Sudhir Patwardhan' was published in 2005.

Patwardhan’s works are in the permanent collection of National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi and Mumbai; Roopankar Museum, Bhopal; Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, New Delhi; Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, USA and other public collections.

The artist lives and works in Thane, near Mumbai.
